ONIDA is striving to increase its share in the television market in the country from the present 12 per cent to 15 per cent during the current financial year and the total turnover (including appliances) to Rs 1,500 crore from Rs 1200 crore, according to Mr G. Sundar, Chief Executive Officer.

He was addressing a press meet here after launching the series of premium TV sets christened Poison. He said six models of the new series would be available in the market in the price range of Rs 17,000-35,000. All the models would be flat TV sets. Posion LCD would be priced at Rs 49,990 and Poison Home Theatre at Rs 1,69,990.

Mr Sundar said the series had already been launched in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. After Vizag, it would be launched in Hyderabad and then across the country. "We hope to sell 10,000 Poison TV sets during this month itself and by the end of the year the series might account for 15 per cent of our total TV sales," he said.

He said Onida had a manufacturing plant with a capacity of 2.8 million TV sets per annum and at present only 60 per cent of the capacity was being utilised. Onida had also made a mark in the markets abroad - the Gulf, Russia and the Ukraine. "We could sell one lakh TV sets in Russia and the Ukraine during 2004-2005. We also have a plant there," he said.

He said Onida washing machines, air-conditioners and microwave were also doing well in the market. "We are no longer a TV company alone. Of the Rs 1,200-crore turnover, TVs account for 75 per cent and appliances the rest. We have in all 32 TV models, seven AC models, six types of microwave and seven models of washing machines," he said.
