Monumental building

Paul Noronha

A Victoria passes by the 134-year-old Esplanade Mansion which has been placed on the Global Watch List of `100 World Endangered Monuments' by the New York-based World Monuments Fund.

The Esplanade Mansion was the first building in Mumbai to be built completely around a cast-iron frame. It is one of the few examples of such construction surviving in the country and perhaps in the world. Mumbai's conservationists are hoping that, with the building placed on the red-alert list, the long-awaited and much-needed restoration and repair will begin.
