Coimbatore , July 4

THE Agricultural College and Research Institute did not stop with the release of new crop varieties and farm implements this year. It went a step further by suggesting management technologies to contain post-harvest loss.

Almost ten new crop varieties, including two each of rice and sugarcane, a spinach, guava, redgram, soyabean and sesamum and five farm implements were released by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa.

The ADT (R) 47 Rice is a 118-day crop, with a yield potential of 6,200 kg/hec. Researchers say that the highest yield obtained for this medium slender white rice stood at 10,610 kg/hec.

ADT (R) 48 Rice has recorded a grain yield potential of 4,800 kg/hec, although the highest yield obtained was almost double at 8,750 kg/hec. This is a long, slender, white rice variety with crop duration of 94 days, suitable for adoption under water scarce situations.

Wheat COW (W) 1 is an 85 to 90 day duration crop with 6,450 kg/hec grain yield potential.

Soyabean - CO (Soy) 3, a medium duration variety, resistant to yellow mosaic virus can be adopted in Erode and Coimbatore districts.

Sugarcane CO Si (SC) 6 is a thick, erect, non flowering and easily detrashable cane suitable for early drought and late water logging condition, moderately resistant to red rot, but susceptible to early shoot borer and inter node borer.

Sugarcane COG (SC) 5 on the other hand is yellowish green medium thick cane, which is good for making jaggery.

Guava TRY (G) 1 is an off-season fruit bearing tree with good quality traits.

Besides the release, the researchers suggest adoption of Srivilliputhur IPM Module.
