New Delhi , July 4

THE Dubai-based Emirates Airlines plans to set up a regional training centre in India and is also looking at having dedicated first and business class lounges for its passengers at some Indian airports, the airline's Senior Vice-President, Commercial Operations, West Asia and Indian Ocean, Mr Nabil Sultan, said.

"India will probably be the first country after Dubai where we will have such a training centre.

Initially, it will only be for the Emirates staff, but as we grow, it will be open for others also. The right ingredients are available here to train our staff," Mr Sultan said.

The airline is yet to firm up the quantum of funds that would be required for the project but hopes to finalise the exact location of the new centre in the next two-to-three 2-3 months.

Initially, the centre will offer courses in ticketing, management, customer services and telephone techniques and at a later stage, even look at the training of engineers and cabin crew. Emirates, which already has a call centre in Mumbai, is also looking at expanding the work done by it. "We are very committed to the Indian market and in the future, you will see us make major investments here," Mr Nabil said. The airline is already in talks with some parties for exclusive first and business class lounges for its passengers at Mumbai airport, officials said.
