Bangalore , July 6 THE doubling of the 49-km Maddur-Mysore stretch on State highway 17 will be completed by December this year, five months ahead of schedule, according to its contractor company, Soma Enterprises. The Bangalore-Mysore SH has a high density of traffic estimated at nearly 20,000 passenger vehicles a day. The four-laning of the stretch at a cost of Rs 116.2 crore is designed for a speed of 100 kmph. The company bagged the contract from the State-owned Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd as part of the SH improvement programme. Work on the stretch (km 82.5 to 97.2, and km 101 to 135.35) began in May 2004. Some 400 engineers and workers were deployed on it. The contract involved the construction of four major bridges over the Lokapavani, Cauvery and Paschimavahini rivers, a 7-m wide carriageway and a 2.5-m wide earthen shoulder on both sides, besides 23 minor bridges, straightening of 19 curves, 122 culverts, 22 bus bays and two truck lay-byes. Soma, with a latest turnover of Rs 330 crore, has projects worth over Rs 3,500 crore on highway, irrigation and hydropower, including the execution of NH-5, AP-18 and the Nellore bypass which form part of the Golden Quadrilateral project.
