Infrastructure Multipurpose jetties to be permitted along Konkan coast Our Bureau
Mumbai , July 6 THE Maharashtra Government on Wednesday decided to grant permission to developers for the construction of multipurpose terminals and jetties along the Konkan coast. The decision was taken as construction of small ports along the coast was hit by long delays. Briefing the mediapersons about the decision, the Chief Minster, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, said seven ports had been given go ahead since 1996, but work was yet to commence at these ports. Despite this, port developers were seeking permission for building jetties, as there was an upswing in marine transportation. The jetties are cheaper and operational round the year; it also creates job opportunities for the local population, he said. The developers will have to present their techno-feasibility report about the viability of the jetty and terminals to the Maharashtra Maritime Board for approval. The turnover tax on such jetties and terminals would be one-and-a-half times more than captive jetties.
