Retailing Industry & Economy - Events CII (east) to hold meet on retailing on July 14 Our Bureau
Kolkata , July 8 THE Confederation of Indian Industry (Eastern Region) will organise an exclusive conference on retail and retailing activity in the eastern region on July 14. The conference, which will "analyse the science of shopping", will be addressed by, among others, Mr Paco Underhill, CEO and Founder of Envirosell and an authority on retailing. Speaking to presspersons here today, Mr Rahul Saraf, Convenor, Retail Core Group, Confederation of Indian Industry, Eastern Region, said about 100-150 major retailers, real estate developers and consultants on retail management, among others, would attend Retail 2005. The conference would have exclusive sessions on "the science of shopping, future of retail and discussions with key retailers on consumer insight". Mr Saraf said that the share of organised retail vis-à-vis overall retail sales was slated to go up from 2.5 per cent at present to eight per cent by 2010. While India has about 12 million retail outlets, only a handful of them have a covered area of more than 500 sq.ft. The bulk of the retail spending was done by people in the 19-39 age group. The number of people in the spending category was slated to go up from 92 million at present to 153 million by 2010. As such, retailing was set to become increasingly important in the days ahead, he said.
