The Hindu Business Line : Fishermen's forum opposes ship-breaking along AP coast

THE Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board has issued orders to Steelex India and Ganesh Container and Syndicate to stop ship-breaking activity at the fishing harbour here.

Mr K. Srirama Murthy, Environmental Engineer, APPCB, said here on Friday that the board had received complaints from the Andhra Pradesh Traditional Fisherfolk Forum and others that two ships were being broken at the fishing harbour."Immediately, we responded and issued stoppage orders ," he said.

Mr Arjilli Dasu, convener of the Andhra Pradesh Traditional Fisherfolk Forum, said the two vessels were brought into the fishing harbour on July 4 for breaking.

"We immediately informed the APPCB officials and orders were issued on Thursday suspending the activity. By that time, one ship had already been broken," he said.

He said the fishermen were opposed to ship-breaking activity anywhere along the coast from Srikakulam to Nellore, as it would pose grave threat to fish and in turn affect the livelihood of fishermen.

"Earlier this year, attempts were made at Kakinada to allow ship-breaking. It was stalled by the fishermen and the local NGOs. Greenpeace has also taken up a campaign against the move. We will sensitise the public on the dangers of ship-breaking and oppose the activity anywhere along the coast," he added.
