Mumbai , July 8

AIR INDIA and Jet Airways (India) Ltd have reached a short-term agreement for the wet lease by Air India of Jet Airways' A340-300E aircraft for operating a daily flight between Mumbai and London.

According to an official release, Air India proposes to use the wet leased aircraft till July 27, to operate seven flights a week between Mumbai and London — five non-stop flights and two flights via Ahmedabad. This is, however, subject to receiving the necessary approvals.

According to an AI spokesperson, the national carrier hopes to begin the operations with the wet leased aircraft in a couple of days.

The new A340-300E aircraft was taken on lease by Jet from South African Airways to begin its operations to the US. However, the airline's US operations have been delayed as the private carrier has not yet received approval from the US.

When contacted, Mr Saroj Datta, Executive Director, Jet Airways, said the airline hoped to receive approval shortly and it hoped to commence its US operations in the first half of August.

AI will operate the wet leased aircraft in a two-class configuration of 38 Business Class and 231 Economy Class seating.

Under the agreement, Jet Airways will provide the aircraft as well as the Cockpit and Cabin Crew. The private carrier will also be responsible for the maintenance of the aircraft. Air India will, however, provide the in-flight catering on these flights and operate them as AI flights.

The agreement will enable AI to meet its short-term capacity requirements while simultaneously helping Jet Airways to utilise its spare capacity, the statement said.
