TN subsidy for Nilgiris small tea growers

Our Bureau

Chennai , July 11

THE Tamil Nadu Government has announced a subsidy scheme to help small tea growers in the Nilgiris, in the light of a steep fall in market prices.

Under the scheme, tea growers having up to 25 acres will get Rs 2 a kg of green tea leaf. This scheme will be in force for six months from now, according to the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa.

In a press release, she said the scheme would benefit about 60,000 small tea growers. They will get about Rs 2,800 for an acre under the assumption that an acre would yield 1,400 kg of green tea leaf. The scheme will cost the exchequer Rs 28 crore, she said.

Ms Jayalalithaa said she had written to the Prime Minister informing him of the State Government's decision to offer this subsidy and requesting the Centre to compensate the State for the scheme. She said the Centre's price stabilisation fund scheme was unlikely to benefit small tea growers in the Nilgiris and wanted the scheme to be recast with a liberal approach.
