Shipping KoPT Q1 traffic touches 11.66 mt Our Bureau
Kolkata , July 12 IN the first quarter of the current fiscal (2005-06), the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) posted highest growth in traffic - both in absolute and percentage terms - among all major ports, according to KoPT sources. During the period from April to June, the port handled 11.66 million tonnes of traffic compared with 8.95 mt in the same period of 2004-05, thus achieving an absolute growth of 2.71 mt, highest among all major ports. During the same period, Visakhapatnam's incremental traffic was 2.3 mt (representing 20.9 per cent growth) at the total traffic of 13.3 mt followed by Chennai's 1.93 mt (20.8 per cent) at 11.2 mt. In percentage terms, Kolkata port, which posted 30.16 per cent growth at 11.6 mt, was followed by Mormugao port, 27.13 per cent (8.22 mt), and Mumbai port, 23.4 per cent (9.5 mt). The national average growth during the period was 16.26 per cent at 99.89 mt. Kolkata port consists of two dock systems - Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC). During the period under review, KDS recorded 29 per cent growth in traffic at 1.439 mt (1.115mt) and HDC 30.4 per cent at 10.223 mt (7.838 mt). With container throughput of 48,405 TEUs (35,454 TEUs), KDS achieved 36.5 per cent growth, the highest among all major container handling ports and Haldia with a iron ore throughput of 1.834 mt (0.773 mt) posted 137.26 per cent growth in iron ore traffic, the second highest among all major ports. New Mangalore posted highest growth of 137.8 per cent at 2.67 mt in iron ore throughput. Dr A.K. Chanda, Chairman of KoPT, attributed the improved performance to the rise in diverse cargo, several user-friendly measures such as better facilities, rationalisation of charges and all-out cooperation from all sections of employees.
