Doktor Mom plans foray into regulated markets

"We are looking to take the product to other markets through out-licensing deals with other companies."

Mumbai , July 12

DOKTOR Mom, the estimated Rs 75-crore brand that was "born in India and raised in Russia", is looking to foray into other global regulated markets such as the US and Europe.

The Mumbai-based JB Chemicals sells its Doktor Mom range of cough syrups, lozenges, and rubs in Russia and other CIS countries, but not in India.

And the plan to take it to other regulated markets is being spearheaded by Mr Nirav Mody, Vice-President Strategic Marking (International).

The milestone ahead is to get the brand to push the Rs 100-crore mark, he said. "We are looking to take the product to other markets through out-licensing deals with other companies," Mr Mody told Business Line.

Earlier this month, JB Chemicals had out-licensed to Ranbaxy the marketing of Doktor Mom in Romania.

Mr Mody said that the company would be interested in expanding the scope of this agreement.

It could be both in terms of getting more products into the alliance or taking the same product to other regulated markets, he indicated. The products would be manufactured at the facilities in Panoli and Daman.

Doktor Mom was recently awarded `Superbrand 2005' status in Russia, the company said. Superbrands is an independent international arbiter on branding, operating across 40 countries.

Mr J.B. Mody, Chairman and Managing Director, said in a statement: "We can proudly say that Doktor Mom was born in India and raised in Russia."

A few months back, the company entered into a contract manufacturing agreement for over-the-counter cough and cold products with Australian company, Pharm-a-Care.

Meanwhile, it has outlined a plan to touch Rs 1,000 crore by 2008-09 under its vision called Panchratna. "The five strengths on which that vision will grow are research, regulatory affairs, finance, marketing, and manufacturing," said Mr Mody.

The company looks to end the current fiscal with sales of Rs 450 crore. About 60 per cent of this is expected to come from exports.
