`Catch declining due to fishing during breeding period'

Mangalore , July 12

SPEAKERS at a seminar on `Fish and prawn culture' have expressed concern over fishing in the sea during the fish-breeding season.

The seminar was organised by the College of Fisheries, Mangalore, on Tuesday to commemorate `Fish Farmers' Day'.

Mr R.P. Kotekar, governing body member of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries University, Bidar, said fish production in the sea is declining. He attributed this to the tendency among some fishermen to venture into the sea during the fish breeding period.

"We are in a dangerous position as far fish production is concerned. Some people venture into the sea during monsoon, in spite of a ban on fishing during that period," he said.

Agreeing with Mr Kotekar's views, Mr H.P.C. Shetty, former Director of the college, said fishermen should pay attention to systematic fish production. There is good scope for freshwater fish and prawn culture in coastal Karnataka, he said.

The Dean in-charge of the college, Prof Joseph Manicherry, who presided over the programme, said freshwater aquaculture should be encouraged in coastal Karnataka. This could provide another source of revenue to farmers, who mainly depend on agricultural activities, he said.

More than 50 farmers from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts attended the seminar.
