Telecommunications Reliance Infocomm challenges penalty for `call re-routing' Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 12 RELIANCE Infocomm has filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) upholding imposition of a penalty of Rs 150 crore on it by the Government for allegedly routing international long distance calls as local ones. Reliance Infocomm has contended that call re-routing under the home country direct service was a global practice, which was resorted to by all service providers including state-owned telecom companies MTNL and BSNL. The Department of Telecom had imposed a penalty of Rs 150 crore on Reliance Infocomm for violating the licence condition and the same was challenged by Reliance in TDSAT. In its petition, the company said there was no violation of any law in call re-routing as it was a technical procedure adopted by the service providers globally. The TDSAT had earlier dismissed Reliance's contention on the grounds that company had breached the licence provisions, putting the security of the nation in jeopardy. Reliance Infocomm, then owned by Mr Mukesh Ambani, had paid the penalty under protest while reserving the right to challenge TDSAT's verdict in the Supreme Court.
