Banking reforms

The proposed pay hike for the top brass of public sector banks (PSBs) reiterates the Government's determination to infuse a sense of autonomy in the banking sector.

Easing the Government's hold in more areas of the PSBs may generate enthusiasm and render the banks globally competitive. The PSBs are set for a near take-off, once the processes of grant of autonomy and the mergers are completed. But this seems to be tedious process, as the unions have launched agitation against the move.

No reform can be successful without the active participation of the work force in any industry and, hence, the Government should immediately start dialogues with the unions before kick starting efforts for reform in the banking sector.
