Policy Bill banning dance bars introduced in Maharashtra Assembly Our Bureau
Mumbai , July 14 THE Bill banning the dance bars in Maharashtra was introduced in the Vidhan Sabha on Thursday. The Bill, which is in the form of an amendment to the Bombay Police Act, 1951, bans dance performances in eating houses, beers bars and permit rooms. On March 30, 2005, on the floor of the House, the Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister, Mr R.R. Patil, had banned dance performances in bars across the State. At that time, Mr Patil said many crimes were committed by those addicted to raunchy dance performances in the bars. In some instances it even included killings of one's own parents, he said. According to the Bill, illegal dance performances in bars, permit rooms and eateries will attract three years in jail and a fine of Rs 2 lakh. It will be a non-bailable crime. The Bill has also made provisions for cancelling all the previous dance performance licences. If, in spite of the ban, performances are held then law has also provision for cancelling the certificate of registration. It has made provision for refunding licence fee on a pro-rata basis. An estimated Rs 17.5 lakh would be made available for refund. However, dance performances held in drama theatres, cinema theatres, sports clubs and gymkhanas, that have restricted entry will not attract the provision of the Act. Similarly, performances in three-star hotels, dances for cultural and tourism promotion will not come under the purview of the Act.
