BSN Medical begins India operations

Our Bureau

Mumbai , July 14

THE Indian subsidiary of BSN Medical GmbH has begun operations in India, four years after BSN Medical was created by Germany's Beiersdorf AG (owner of Nivea) and London's orthopaedic healthcare company Smith & Nephew Plc.

BSN Medical is a 50:50 joint-venture in which both parent companies pooled businesses in orthopaedic, wound-care and phlebology (related to veins in the human body). The Indian subsidiary, BSN Medical Pvt Ltd, is a 61:39 joint-venture between BSN Medical and the Menezes family of Goa respectively.

Mr Ramesh S. Ghodge, Managing Director of the Indian subsidiary, said it took four years to sort out the structure of the company, the share-holding pattern etc. Beiersdorf has another 51:49 joint-venture with the Menezes family for its consumer business.

Meanwhile, BSN Medical expects to clock Rs 45-crore sales in its first year of operation. The company targets Rs 100 crore four years down the line.

Sales would be both institutional and retail, he said and added that new products would be launched next year. Current products include adhesive tapes, dressing etc. About 30 per cent of the existing market was in the unorganised sector, he said.

Beiersdorf India Pvt Ltd and Smith & Nephew Healthcare Pvt Ltd will, however, remain subsidiaries of respective parent companies and continue to promote their brands in the Indian market. There will be no overlapping of product-lines, a company official said.
