TN transport wage talks from July 21

WAGE negotiations are to start between the managements and employees of the Tamil Nadu transport corporations from July 21, according to an official press release.

A committee constituted to look into the demands of the trade unions regarding wages submitted its recommendations on Wednesday. The Government has constituted a committee to negotiate wage settlement on behalf of the managements. This committee comprises the managing directors of the State Transport Corporations, the joint managing director of the Tamil Nadu Transport Development Finance Corporation and officials from the Finance Department.

This committee will hold wage talks with various trade unions of the transport corporations, the release said.

According to official statistics, there are seven State Transport Undertakings (STUs), which operate with a total fleet strength of 16,773. The seven STUs were created by amalgamating 21 undertakings as a part of an austerity measure and to improve efficiency of operations.

The employee strength is estimated at 6.88 per bus including those in the workshop. The total accumulated losses of the STUs are Rs 2,131.88 crore as of March 2004. The STUs reported a profit of Rs 2.38 crore in 2003-04.
