Toyota `eyeing TN too for new plant'

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , July 14

TAMIL NADU, which accounts for the largest share of sales of the new crossover vehicle from Toyota — Innova — in the South, has something to cheer with Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) considering the State among others where it would like to establish a plant as part of efforts to enhance its market share in the personal car segment in the country.

For Toyota, Tamil Nadu has also emerged as a major market for its executive class offering — Toyota Corolla — with the State coming next only to Karnataka in the number Corollas sold in the South.

Speaking at a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Sailesh Shetty, DGM, Sales, TKM, Bangalore, said the in the South, Tamil Nadu is the biggest market for MPVs with the State accounting for a market share of 31 per cent. On an average, in Tamil Nadu, around 750 MPVs (all brands included) are sold per month followed by Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

He said the sale of Innova has doubled since its launch in March. While 862 Innovas were sold in March, it doubled to 1,633 in June and since launch, 43,00 units have been sold in the South and Tamil Nadu's share in this was around 11 per cent.

One of the reasons for the success of Innova was that it attracted customers from both car and MPV segments. The sale of Corolla was also going up in the South despite it being a `diesel oriented market' and TKM's market share in this segment has gone up from 25 per cent to 33 per cent in the first six months of 2005 in the South.

He said TKM was planning to sell close to 14,000 Innovas in the South in the 10 months (since its launch in March) during this year and in Tamil Nadu the number would be 3,800. For Corolla, while the share of the entire South was pegged at 2,500 vehicles, in Tamil Nadu 600 vehicles might be sold during this year.
