Shipping Port unions threaten nationwide stir Our Bureau
Mumbai , July 15 PORT unions have threatened to strike work in protest against the "indifference shown by the port authorities and the Government towards the port and dock workers' demands." The unions will serve a notice on the port authorities and the Government about their intention to organise a nation-wide industrial action. This was announced on Friday by the President of the All-India Port & Dock Workers' Federation, Mr S.R. Kulkarni. He said the representatives of the five major federations of port and dock workers had met here on July 12 and had reviewed the situation over several pending issues with the major port authorities and the Centre. According to an office-bearer of the federation, the unions of the individual ports would in consultation with the federation decide on when to serve notice on the authorities. Among the demands of the port and dock workers is the merger of 50 per cent of DA in basic pay. The unions have voiced concern over the Government's attempt to privatise the services of the major ports by inviting foreign direct investment under the pretext of modernising and expanding port facilities. They have also taken up the issue of productivity-linked reward (bonus) for the financial year 2004-05, as well as cadre restructuring of officers and the proposed implementation of common RSP regulations in all the major ports, which would affect the promotion opportunities of Class III and IV employees. The representatives of the port and dock workers have cautioned the Government and the port authorities that if these demands are not conceded within a month from the date of the notice issued by the unions, the workers at all the major ports would have no option but to resort to industrial action.
