A desalination plant is being established at Bheemunipatnam, popularly known as Bhimli, as the coastal town in Visakhapatnam district is facing a water scarcity.

The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 11 crore. Bhimli, a quaint old town with Dutch monuments, is the first municipality in the State and is a favoured tourist spot. It has a population of 45,000.

Four wells in the town have turned saline and there is a possibility that the new wells being dug may suffer the same fate. To solve the problem, the desalination plant is being taken up by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Using native technology and microthin membranes, water will be desalinated. As desalination of seawater can be very expensive, sub-soil water away from the sea will be desalinated. The cost of desalinating such water is estimated at Rs 30 per kilolitre.
