`Corporates lack information about rural markets'

Our Bureau

Kolkata , July 15

MR Pradeep Kashyap, Managing Director of MART, a rural marketing development consultancy agency, today said that lack of information was a major hurdle before the Indian corporate sector in tapping the rural market.

Talking to mediapersons here today, following the release of his book on rural marketing, Mr Kashyap said that as urban markets were getting saturated, FMCG companies were being forced to look at the Rs 1,25,000 crore rural market which was growing at the rate of 12 to 13 per cent per annum, which was much higher than the seven to eight per cent growth experienced by the urban market.

Also the urban market was much smaller in size compared to the rural sector.

"The prospects in rural market will increase manifold once the per capita consumption ratio improves," he said, adding that the development of infrastructure such as electricity, roads and so on would increase the consumption ratio. Mr Kashyap lauded the recent initiative of UPA Government in this regard.
