Environmental watch on Sethusamudram

Our Correspondent

Madurai , July 15

THE Ministry of Shipping will pay serious attention to the monitoring of environmental impact during and after the implementation of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel project (SSCP), assured the Secretary, Department of Shipping, Mr D.T. Joseph, here on Friday.

Delivering the inaugural address at the `Workshop on environmental monitoring plan and guidelines for Sethusamudram ship channel project' organised by the Tuticorin Port Trust (TPT) in association with Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI), Tuticorin and the Centre for Advanced Studies in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Mr Joseph observed that while it has taken 145 years for the project to fructify, still sections of people felt about the environmental impact of the project.

Nobody would say that the environment would not be affected but growth and development depended on the modification of the environment by handling the environmental characteristics in a balanced manner so that while the ecology is maintained without being adversely affected, a sustainable development process becomes possible.

The Ministry of Shipping will be careful in monitoring the environment so that adverse impact is minimised. The meet, instead of giving broad outlines should come out with specific action plan for the purpose during implementation and thereafter, he said and urged the participants to arrive at a consensus in drawing the environmental management plan.
