Expansion to boost Delhi Metro revenues

Moumita Bakshi Chatterjee

New Delhi , July 15

THE Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is projecting a 177 per cent jump in its revenues to about Rs 180 crore during 2005-06, on the back of an increasing fare collection from its expanding network of lines as well as rental from property.

"We expect the overall revenues in 2005-06 to be about Rs 180 crore compared to about Rs 65 crore clocked in 2004-05. The growth in revenues will primarily come from the expansion in lines. A part of it would also come from rentals from kiosks and shops at the footprint of metro stations, as also from advertisements on coaches," Mr R.N. Joshi, Director (Finance), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, said here.

The metro project — currently in its first phase — commissioned Line II in July connecting the heart of national Capital — Central Secretariat with Kashmere Gate. This new section completed the about 11-km Vishwa Vidyalaya to Central Secretariat underground line.

"The revenue realisation from fare collection alone stood at about Rs 50 crore in 2004-05, as only certain sections of the link were operational. Further, we launched the Vishwa Vidyalaya to Kashmere Gate section in December 2004, and therefore the revenues from this link pertained to only three-month period till the closing of previous financial year. However this year, we launched the Central Secretariat with Kashmere Gate section in July which means that the revenues realisation would span over six months of this fiscal," he said.

Mr Joshi said that the corporation had planned an investment outlay of Rs 2,000 crore during 2005-06, which would primarily go into construction of the Line III connecting IP Depot to Dwarka subcity. "This year the loan component will be about Rs 1,500 crore, and this will be sourced from Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), which also holds 64 per cent stake in DMRC," he added.

"Substantial part of this line would be completed by December 2005. While the Barakhamba-Dwarka phase will be commissioned by December this year, the extension into Dwarka subcity and between Barakhamba and IP Depot will be completed by March 2006," he pointed out.
