Mangalore SBI to launch 3 more schemes for Campco

Mangalore , July 17

THE Mangalore regional office of State Bank of India, which recently launched `produce loan' scheme to the arecanut grower members of Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd, will soon launch three more schemes, according to the SBI Regional Manager, Dr V. Eswaran.

Inaugurating the `Golden Jubilee Bank Day' celebrations here on Saturday, he said that these schemes were aimed at the overall welfare of the members of the co-operative. In the first scheme, educational loans will be given to children of Campco members. The second scheme will help members to take up cultivation activities. He said Campco members will be given other loans in the third scheme.

Under the `produce loan' scheme — which was launched by the bank at Vittal in Dakshina Kannada district recently — a member can take loans on arecanut by pledging it at designated Campco godowns. The grower gets 60 per cent of the value of the commodity as loan at a competitive rate of interest.

Dr Eswaran said the bank would open branches in Karkala in Udupi , Sullia and Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada and Sakleshpur in Hassan district during the current year.

To give focused attention to the coastal region, the bank had launched a special programme called `Operation Karavali' a year ago. He said the programme consisted of three aspects. The first was to reach customers of the bank. In the second aspect it focused on touching the lives of people in the region. The third aspect was to increase the market share in the area.

To touch the lives of people, the bank is engaged in various community-banking projects, he said. Under this, the bank has donated Rs 2 lakh to the silver jubilee fund of the Mangalore University. He said that 22 branches in the region have taken up several activities under the community services banking concept.

The Mangalore regional office has taken up business process reengineering to improve the speed of disposal of advances in the area. Staff of the bank will be used to reach the public at their doorsteps, and help them in getting various facilities of the bank, he added.
