Funskool to retail Powerpuff Girls range of toys

Chennai , July 18

FUNSKOOL India has entered into an exclusive agreement with Cartoon Network to retail a range of toys featuring the Network's popular kindergarten trio - The Powerpuff Girls.

The licence agreement is for an initial period of two years, and is the first such exclusive tie-up in India. The company expects this association with Cartoon Network will strengthen its offering in the television cartoon-based toy range, a press release said. The company plans to gain a market share of over 30 per cent in the growing cartoon-based merchandising category of the organised toy market. Funskool will be locally producing board games, puzzles and creative items featuring the Powerpuff Girls at its factories, the release said.

Mr Raphael Kuriyan, Chief Executive, Funskool, said the relationship between entertainment based toys and the cartoons themselves is symbiotic. TV programming holds the interest of the child and drives the toy sales, while toys based on popular characters help increases viewership.

He said that with demand growing for contemporary cartoon-based toys in the Indian market, the company would be in a position to take advantage of the range of offerings from Cartoon Network. Cartoon based toys account for 25 per cent of the company's sales revenues, he said.

Funskool is also planning Point of Sale (POS) material to promote the toys and to bring out the variety and excitement of the PowerPuff Girls collection, including character appearances in retail shops. Funskool distributes other popular brands that are featured on Cartoon Network like Bob the Builder, Thomas and Friends, Batman, Superman, Tom and Jerry, and Scooby Doo.

The Emmy Award-winning The Powerpuff Girls, an original cartoon series from Cartoon Network, currently ranks among the network's top five highest rated programmes across households as well as across child demographics ranging from boys aged between 2 and 11 and girls between 6 and 11.
