Unnecessary expenditure

This is with reference to "Needless taxation" (Offhand column, Business Line, July 18).

Though successive governments assure us that they would cut down on government expenditure to reduce the tax burden on citizens, it has never really happened.

Though there have been many instances of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reporting unwarranted government expenditure resulting in huge losses to the Exchequer, no action has been taken against the erring department(s).

A recent example of the government's extravagance is the move to spend about Rs 760 crore for the purchase of six aircraft, two each exclusively for the President, Vice-President and the Prime Minister.

Since there is much talk about transparency in government, the Prime Minister should issue regular bulletins informing the People's Representatives of reductions in expenditure, if any.
