The Commerce Secretary, Mr S.N. Menon (right), being welcomed by Mr Saroj Poddar, Senior Vice-President, FICCI, at a seminar on `Diversification of Indian Exports to China' in the Capital on Wednesday. Ramesh Sharma
New Delhi , July 20 THE Government has unveiled a six-point plan for giving a thrust to the country's exports to China. This is aimed at enabling Indian exports to make a significant dent in the Chinese market by diversification of the export basket from primary products to manufactured items and processed products, the Commerce Secretary, Mr S.N. Menon said here on Wednesday. Addressing a seminar on `Diversification of Indian Exports to China' organised jointly by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr Menon said that in order to achieve higher volumes and diversify the trade basket, it was necessary to conduct market research on price patterns and tariffs and sources of imported products by China. India could also set up branches or representative offices in China to showcase products, liaison with the Chinese Provincial and Central Governments, learn about import requirements from multinational manufacturers having investment in China and focus on investment and trade in knowledge-based service sectors in view of its comparative advantage, he said. Emphasising the need for focusing on high value-added products, Mr Menon said a FICCI study, carried out recently, had listed out them as auto engine components and automobiles, organic and inorganic products and pharmaceuticals, metal and metal-based products, agricultural products, engineering goods, marine foods, fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, medical and diagnostic equipment and laboratory equipment, consumer durables and textile yarns.
