Business directory of small units on anvil

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad , July 20

A BUSINESS register, which lists small industrial units with 20 plus employees, is being compiled by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DE&S), Andhra Pradesh.

The survey covering manufacturing units has so far identified about 11,109 such small enterprises in the State with 20 plus employees. It is the first of its kind in the country, being supported by the Union Ministry of Programme Implementation and Statistics.

While the Union Ministry has given Rs 11 lakh this year, the State is chipping in with Rs 26 lakh. The register is almost ready and in August, DE&S plans to come up with a complete database, according to Dr Saroja Rama Rao, its Director.

The register would provide information on six important parameters - the factory, the economic activity, personnel, output, capital formation and depreciation, she told Business Line.

It is planned to come up with quarterly Index of industrial Production (IIP), for these units also. This exercise would give us an idea of the capital formation and the State income figures easily, Dr Saroja said. The survey has shown that the manufacturing units with 20 plus employees were concentrated mainly in the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Guntur, Chittoor, Visakhapatnam and Warangal.

In addition to the traditional manufacturing units, the DE&S survey is looking at the growing services sector, educational institutions, corporate hospitals, hotels and restaurants and other new business areas.

The DE&S Annual Survey of Industries in AP for 2001-02 showed that there were 14,237 factories in the State providing employment to 8.92 lakh persons.

These factories with a productive capital of Rs 36,666.30 crore produce goods valued at Rs 63,919.51 crore of net value added in the manufacturing sector.
