Chennai , July 21

THE buoyant air cargo market has coincided with the start of MD-11 operations by Transmile Air, a Malaysian air cargo carrier.

Mr S.R. Mani, Country Manager, Transmile Air, said the airline was earlier operating B727s to Chennai. The MD-11 has a cargo capacity of about 80 tonnes while the B727-200s has a capacity of about 25 tonnes.

The airline operates six services a week between its hub at Subang airport in Kuala Lumpur and Chennai. The Bangalore-Kuala Lumpur sector is served six times a week with B727s,id.

The MD-11s are a new addition to the airline's fleet of B727 and B737. The airline has taken delivery of the MD-11s last month.

Mr Mani said Transmile services the Far East market, especially Hong Kong and carries cargo onward from Kuala Lumpur. It recently secured the fifth freedom rights to carry cargo from Shanghai to Cincinnati, as well as from Hong Kong to Los Angeles.

The airline is also awaiting safety approvals from the US Federal Aviation Administration to start this service. Once itstarts, exporters from India will also benefit from quick access into the US market, he said.
