Climate & Weather Wet spell on in North-East and peninsula Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , July 21 THE monsoon trough continued to run close to the foothills of the Himalayas on Thursday, causing rainfall activity to remain confined to the North-Eastern States, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and areas close to the foothills and South peninsular India. A weather update by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) said that the monsoon is likely to remain in a weak phase for another 2-3 days. The centre maintained its watch for a low-pressure system expected to form over the North-West Bay of Bengal during the weekend, which could help revive the monsoon in the plains of the North and the North-West. A Western disturbance is seen approaching north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir by Sunday. It is likely to cause scattered to fairly widespread rainfall in parts of North-West India on Sunday through Monday. Except for Uttaranchal, where rainfall will be scattered with isolated heavy fall, the region is likely to receive isolated rainfall during the next two days. Rain activity is likely to enhance thereafter over parts of the region. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over north Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and the North-Eastern States during the next three days. From Saturday, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Orissa and Gangetic West Bengal. Isolated rainfall is expected over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Vidarbha during the next 2-3 days. The activity may increase with the likely revival of monsoon after Saturday. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala during the next three days. Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Rayalseema, and north interior Karnataka.
