Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: Following reports of high prevalence of malaria and gastroenteritis in the tribal areas of Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts, the Andhra Pradesh Government has sent search teams for detection and treatment.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr K Rosaiah, Minister for Finance and Health, said the Chief Minister reviewed the situation and directed the districts officials.

A joint director had been appointed to exclusively monitor issues related to tribal health. The Government also decided to fill up all the vacancies in hospitals in tribal areas. Of a total of 364 doctors posts, there were 90 vacancies.

About 36,000 people were screened in Paderu (Visakhapatnam dist) area for the disease. "There were no deaths reported," the Minister said. The Government also decided to upgrade a number of primary healthcare centres.
