Mumbai , July 21

HINDUSTAN Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has roped in the services of NCR Corporation, US, for the automation of 425 of its premier Club HP outlets across the country.

Mr S.P. Chaudhary, Executive Director, HPCL Retail, said orders have been placed with the vendor for automation of all 425 outlets. "It would be simultaneously rolled out in all the four zones. The project cost is estimated at Rs 80 crore," he said.

HPCL will control the monitoring of fuel dispensed from their outlets. It will offer its customers assured fuel quality, more payment options, loyalty programmes and a system-driven control for correct quantity while dispensing.

NCR will install its Octane 2000 solution, a business management system specifically developed for the fuel retail industry. The project involves end-to-end solution deployment, including point-of-sale terminals as well as software implementation. NCR will be the system integrator for the project to be rolled out over the next 14 months. NCR will also provide HPCL with an electronic fund transfer solution to handle debit/credit/smart-card transactions.

Mr Srihari Bhat, General Manager of NCR's Retail Solutions Division for South-East Asia, said, "Octane 2000 is a scalable, modular solution that offers HPCL the flexibility to add other components as they fine tune their retail strategy to fit with customer needs. It can also help facilitate HPCL's move towards global trends like self-service petrol pumps, convenience stores and other services at the fuel retail outlets."

The point-of-sale terminals and back-office system will be integrated with a radio frequency identification (RFID)-based tagging system. Each attendant will be provided with RFID tags to unlock the dispensing units for a transaction, tracking complete transactions details. This will help the company to track employee performance and ensure fuel purity and quantity for customers. The customer will also get an automated receipt showing the exact quantity purchased.
