AI, employees' unions reach accord on wages

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 21

THE Air India board has approved the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that the airline has entered into with the AI Employees Guild and AI Employees Union. The two unions represent a majority of the airlines employees. The MoU involves an increase in basic wages and allowances. The last wage agreement was entered into in 1996 and was due for revision since the following year. The new MoU is valid till the end of next year.

In a statement the airline has said that the workers have agreed to improvement in productivity parameters, outsourcing of non-core activities and abolition of restrictive and unproductive work practices. The present agreement would be followed by negotiations with other unions and associations so that a comprehensive wage agreement that would be valid till the end of December next year is arrived at soon.

The additional financial impact as a result of the hike in pay will be offset by improvement in productivity parameters and outsourcing of activities to outside agencies and subsidiary companies, the airline has said.
