Climate & Weather Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather Monsoon trough's eastern end reverts to Bay of Bengal Vinson Kurian
Thiruvananthapuram , July 22 THE eastern end of the monsoon trough has reverted to the sea mouth after descending from the Himalayan foothills in anticipation of the cyclonic circulation expected to take shape over the northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours. The National Centre for Medium Range Forecasting said in its update on Friday that the axis of the monsoon trough passed through Ferozepur (Punjab), Bareilly and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Gaya (Bihar) and Sagar Islands to the northeast Bay of Bengal on Thursday afternoon. The average position of the trough extends from Rajasthan to the North Bay of Bengal. The trough is expected to settle into its normal position further to the South in the next two days, leading to revival of the monsoon and enhancement of rainfall activity over the North, central and eastern parts of the country. A western disturbance is expected to approach north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir by Sunday. It is likely to cause scattered to fairly widespread rainfall in parts of northwest India during three days up till Tuesday. The hilly regions viz. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal may receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during these days. Towards the east, scattered rainfall is likely over north Bihar, Jharkhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and the Northeastern States during the next three days. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is expected over Orissa and Gangetic West Bengal during the next 4-5 days. In central India, scattered rainfall is also expected over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and isolated over Vidarbha during the next 24 hours. Rainfall activity here may increase with the likely revival of monsoon after Saturday. In the peninsula, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely over coastal Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala during the next three days. Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Rayalaseema and North Interior Karnataka. Towards the West, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is likely over Konkan and Goa during the next 2-3 days. Isolated rainfall is also likely over parts of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
