Boeing in talks with IAF for Super Hornet sale

New Delhi , July 22

DAYS after India and the US agreed to strengthen cooperation in a host of fields including defence, the US aircraft major, Boeing, today said that it was in talks with the Indian Air Force for sale and production of the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet.

"There is a lot of inherent capabilities here for both production and technology. However, it will also depend on what the US Government releases," the Company Vice-President, Mr Chris Chadwick, said when asked about co-production of the aircraft here.

The Boeing official said that if Indian industry was successful in building part of the aircraft it would reduce costs.

The issue of joint marketing could also be considered although no talks had yet taken place on this, Boeing officials said. "Boeing sees the next 60 years of aerospace here as dynamic, entrepreneurial and globally competitive," Mr Chadwick said

Boeing was among the global aircraft manufacturers, which was issued Request for Information (RFI) by the Indian Air Force late last year. "We hope to receive the request for proposal which will allow us to compete with others for this project. India would tend to be the potential launch customer for the aircraft (if it decided to choose it)," Mr Chadwick said.

Officials said that the cost to the IAF would depend on the order.
