Wrong signals to importers: Codexia

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , July 24

THE Coimbatore District Exporters and Importers Association (Codexia) has said that the closure of dyeing/bleaching units and the consequent announcement of the Tirupur bandh on July 26 by political parties and hosiery workers unions would send wrong signals to importers of knitwear from India.

It urged both the Union and the State Governments to understand the gravity of the situation and come to the dyeing industry's rescue.

Codexia, in a submission, said that already some of the hosiery exporters in Tirupur had received calls of cancellation of their goods and requests to airfreight the supplies that suffered delays.

The association said that considering the livelihood of lakhs of workers in the industry, the State and Central Governments could intervene in the pollution issue faced by the dyeing units by offering interest-free short-term loans for the units to set up the treatment plants for the `zero' discharge of effluents. The State financial institutions could stand as collateral for the loans.
