Thiruvananthapuram , July 24

SOUTHERN Railway has recorded a hike in earnings of Rs 115 crore during the first quarter of this fiscal over the corresponding period last year.

The quarterly earnings rose from Rs 535 crore to Rs 650 crore year-on-year, said Mr Thomas Varghese, General Manager, Southern Railway. Number of passengers has also showed an increase from 114 million to 120 million.

Under the Special railway Safety Related Funds (SRSF), Rs 120 crore has been made available to Southern Railway. Safety will continue to engage the maximum attention during the year ahead, Mr Varghese said.

The visiting General Manager had detailed discussions with the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, and the Chief Secretary, Mr Palat Mohandas, when he apprised them of the progress of various works in the State.

Electrification of the Ernakulam-Kottayam-Thiruvananthapuram section under the Thiruvananthapuram Division will be completed by December this year.

Cooperation of the State Government has been sought for completing works on three power sub-stations at Chingavanam, Perinad and Kazhakoottam. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has to lay the 110-KV transmission lines to these sub-stations for which an amount of Rs 13 crore has already been paid up.

Mr Varghese thanked the Chief Minister for the expeditious land acquisition for the ongoing doubling and gauge conversion under a fast-track arrangement. Land for Ernakulam-Mulanthuruthi and Mavelikara-Kayamkulam has mostly been made available. Acquisition for the Mavelikara-Chengannur and Cheppad-Kayamkulam double lines is in progress. But Angamali-Sabarimala and Guruvayur-Tanur had made little progress.

As for new trains, a new fast train will be introduced in the Ernakulam-Bangalore City section. The 6347/6348 Thiruvananthapuram-Cannanore Express is being extended to Kasaragod. The 2653/2654 Kochuveli-Nizamuddin Kerala Sampark Kranti Express will now run to Chandigarh. The six days-a-week Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram Anantapuri Express will be made a daily service while the frequency of the 6603/6604 Mangalore-Thiruvananthapuram Maveli Express will be increased form biweekly to tri-weekly.

Major civil works have been proposed for Kozhikode, Palakkad, Thiruvananthapuram Central and Ernakulam Town stations. Electronics-based passenger guidance systems will be widely deployed in the Thiruvananthapuram Division during the course of the year. Rail connectivity to the proposed Vallarpadam transhipment container terminal in Kochi is being processed.

A proposal for setting up Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) sheds at Palakkad and Kollam has been sent to the Railway Board under the programme for 2006-07. The Commissioner, Railway Safety, Bangalore, has approved the speeding up of trains in the Kottayam-Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram section from 90 kmph to 100 kmph, Mr Varghese said.
