Getting a facelift

Women buying fruit from a vendor in front of the LIC building, a heritage structure under renovation in Kolkata. Whiteaway, Laidlaw & Co constructed the building, located at Esplanade in the heart of the city, during the first decade of the last century. It housed a departmental store and was known as the "Harrod's of the East." The structure was taken over by the Metropolitan Insurance Company in later years and after independence it came to the Life Insurance Corporation of India.
