Mangalore , July 25

THE President of the Karnataka State Apex Cooperative Bank Ltd, Mr M.N. Rajendra Kumar, has said that cooperative institutions in the country should follow the Chinese model for marketing agriculture produce.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday after his seven-day visit to China, he said that The Chinese cooperative sector is giving importance for marketing of agriculture produce, along with production.

He said he was a member of the delegation of the All-India Cooperative Federation that visited China recently.

Stating that agriculture marketing, storage and transportation sectors had separate cooperatives in China, he said Indian cooperative sector should take cue from these institutions. The Chinese cooperative institutions also give importance for the transfer of technology to their farmers.

He said that the delegation's report would include all these suggestions.

Compared to India - which has more than one lakh primary agriculture cooperative (PAC) societies - China has only 319 rural credit cooperatives (equivalent to PAC societies). The Chinese Government is now planning to convert them as banks, he said.
