Water AP Govt unwilling to shift Pulichintala project site Our Bureau
Hyderabad , July 25 THE State Government is in no mood to shift the Pulichintala project site despite the objections from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), its ally. Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, Minister for Major and Medium Irrigation, told newspersons on Monday that work would continue on the site in spite of a decision to constitute a committee to study the issue. "A review meeting headed by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has decided to set up a committee. It will try to clear the air with regard to doubts on the project," he said. To a question, he said that work would not stop, amply making it clear that there would not be any change in the project site. The TRS has been demanding a change in the project site as the current one could hamper the interests of the Telangana region. In fact, at the Delhi meeting, Mr K. Chandrasekhara Rao, President of TRS, and the Chief Minister discussed the issue and included it in the six-point formula to resolve the stand-off. The TRS, a coalition partner of the Congress both at the Centre and the State, had withdrawn its Ministers from Dr Reddy's Cabinet early this month. The Delhi meeting had been arranged by the Congress high command to resolve the crisis. However, the proposed technical committee was meant for clearing the air rather than discussing the issue of shift in project site, Mr Lakshmaiah said. Monday's review meeting also agreed to sanction Rs 88.99 crore to an irrigation project to be taken up on the Singur reservoir in the Godavari basin in Medak district. The project, which would be completed in two years, would provide water to 40,000 acres in the district.
"Two out of seven TMC feet of water allotted for the twin cities would be diverted to the project," the Minister said. Interestingly, this project too formed part of the six-point formula. The Minister, however, downplayed the TRS demand.
