New Delhi , July 26

NIHON Pharmaceutical Industry Ltd (NPI), a joint venture between Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd and Nippon Chemiphar Ltd (NC), has launched its first co-developed product, Vogseal (generic-Voglibose) in Japan used for the treatment of diabetes.

The 0.2 mg and 0.3 mg dosage tablets will be sold in Japan under the Ranbaxy/Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry Ltd (NPI) label. It will be marketed and actively promoted to doctors in hospitals as well as in clinics by the field forces of Nippon Chemiphar (NC) and Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry Ltd (NPI).

In a statement, Mr Malvinder Mohan Singh, President Pharmaceuticals and Executive Director, Ranbaxy, said, "We are delighted to introduce our first product in Japan which is a reflection of our R&D strength and excellent cross functional teamwork. Together with our strategic partner, NC, we are committed to building our presence in this key market by providing quality generic alternatives."

Mr Kazushiro Yamaguchi, President & CEO, Nippon Chemiphar, said, "Ranbaxy and Nippon Chemiphar share a mutually beneficial and strategic partnership in Japan and with the successful launch of Vogseal - the first product of our joint venture (Nihon Pharmaceutical Industry Ltd) - we have indicated how closely and successfully the two companies are working together. We are confident that this winning combination will increase the product momentum and lead to the launch of many other such generic products in Japan in the coming time."

Japan is the second largest pharmaceutical market globally, worth $65 billion.

A rapidly ageing population together with Government will and its commitment to reduce mounting healthcare costs are leading to the buoyancy in the generic market.
