Hardware Marketing - New Products & Services Acer notebooks witness 10-fold growth over 3 years Our Bureau
Bangalore , July 28 ACER Computers said on Thursday that its share has nearly doubled in the domestic notebook market, which has seen a 10-fold growth over three years. Acer India's General Manager for Consumer Product Group, Mr S. Rajendran, citing IDC estimates, said the company had managed to expand its market share to over 16 per cent from about nine per cent three years back. The domestic notebook market, which was at around 35,000 units per year in 2002, has grown by 10 times and is estimated to touch 3.6 lakh units in 2005, Mr Rajendran said. Declining prices has been a major driver for the growth in the domestic notebook market and Acer has been at the forefront in adopting aggressive pricing strategy. The company, which launched a sub-Rs 30,000 laptop has launched another variant of an entry level notebook priced around Rs 26,000 recently. Mr Rajendran said the downward trend in notebook pricing seemed to have reached the bottom and no more price drops were anticipated. Acer's entry-level laptops with price points of less than Rs 50,000, have received good response, especially from the student community, educational institutes and the small and medium enterprises, among others, he said. Notebook constituted around 50 per cent of Acer's sales in India while the rest came from desktops. "We are a bit disappointed about our desktop sales," Mr Rajendran said, adding that the company has been trying to make a come back by introducing new offerings. It recently introduced Aspire series of desktop with a sub-Rs 30,000 offering that comes with a TFT monitor, among other features. Acer, which generated revenues of Rs 396 crore in 2003-04, according to Data Quest estimates, is targeting a sales of Rs 600 crore in the current year, Mr Rajendran said.
Acer Ferrari 4000 for Rs 99,999 ACER India launched its new high-end notebook Acer Ferrari 4000 on Thursday. Priced at Rs 99,999, the Acer Ferrari 4000 runs on AMD's Turion 64-bit processor technology and is encased in a sleek black carbon fibre, which is used by Ferrari in its racing car chassis. Carbon fibre is eight times stronger than steel and is half the weight of aluminium. It is backed by ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics card for imagery and execution. Acer expects to sell some 300 Ferrari 4000 a quarter, said Mr S. Rajendran, Acer India General Manager for Consumer Products.
