AMADASOFT India, the software arm of Japan-based Amada Group of companies, is looking to grow about 30 per cent this year.

It recorded revenues of about Rs 7 crore last year. It is also expanding its Chennai operations. It is moving into a new facility measuring about 4,000 sq ft and to house about 30 people. It is to have direct connectivity with the company's centres in the US and software development partners in China.

The Indian arm, with about 120 people, caters to the software requirements of the parent company, which makes sheet metal and other machine tools. The company also plans to work with sheet metal users in India to provide software expertise, said Dr Thanapandi Periyasamy, Director, Amadasoft.

Asked why he moved jobs from Japan to India, Mr Toshio Takagi, Chairman, Amadasoft, said: "When we started here in 1996, hiring a Japanese programmer was between 15 and 20 times costlier than hiring a person in India. It is not only salary cost but also the cost of translating from Japanese to English and then again to the language of the customer's choice, say, Italian or Spanish."

Now, he clarified, Japanese programmers are only 6 to 8 times costlier than Indian programmers.
