Security `Data security vital for BPO growth' Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , July 28 DATA security is crucial to further the growth of business process outsourcing (BPO) in the country and, if India were to maintain the lead, appropriate cyber laws should be framed and implemented, said students of Gitam College of Management and Gayatri Vidya Parishad, while presenting papers at a seminar organised on the opportunities and challenges in the BPO segment here. Mr Phanikumar and Mr Pinakapani of the Gayatri Vidya Parishad said that China was closing in on India and the advantage of having a skilled workforce proficient in English may not last long, as China had embarked on a crash course in teaching English to its job aspirants. Ms Sruti and Ms Neeraja expressed the view that politicians in the US and the labour unions in the UK posed a threat to the growth of BPO. They said companies would have to formulate appropriate employee retention strategies. Mr Madhu, Mr Prasanth and Mr Srikanth in their presentation said that data protection laws were imperative for India to move from the low-end BPO such as call centres to the high-end BPO. Mr David Jones, Deputy Centre Manager of the local call centre of the HSBC, who was the guest speaker, said that BPO was "big and booming" and about 400 of the Fortune 500 companies were outsourcing their work.
