THE Chairperson of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), Ms Ranjana Kumar, has stressed on the public private partnership (PPP) model for making the rural economy viable and competitive.
She was addressing a session at the Summit on Sustainable PPPs in Infrastructure (Suminfra-2005) organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday.
According to her, the investment requirement for strengthening agricultural marketing infrastructure has been estimated to the tune of Rs 2,68,742 crore.
Most of these would need to come from the private sector.
To enable the private sector participation in setting up market yards with all facilities under one roof, Ms Kumar stressed on the need to amend the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act, which encourages contract farming and direct marketing of agricultural produce by farmers.
The Nabard Chairperson also felt the need for developing specialised markets for fruits and vegetables.
