Human Resources ONGC to relook HR policies Plans `special career path' for specialists Pratim Ranjan Bose
Kolkata , July 30 ONGC is considering introduction of a `special career path' for its vast pool of geo-scientists and other specialists right up to the board level. Informed sources say that increasing incidences of poaching of company's knowledge workers by the rival exploration and production companies from India and abroad may have influenced ONGC to take a re-look at its HR policies. At a recently concluded three-day long brainstorming session at Dehradun, `key ONGC executives' had expressed concern at the increasing cases of its geo-scientists quitting for greener pastures. Monetary consideration apart, which plays a key role behind such movements, the company is examining whether lack of career improvement opportunities was a major roadblock in fulfilling the aspirations of its prime workforce and retaining them. As more and more companies are showing interest in oil and gas exploration in Indian shores, chances are high that India's largest E&P company may become a happy hunting ground for poachers in the future. According to some rough estimates, close to 50 such geo-scientists have quit the PSU in the last few months. Nearly all of them were in their early or mid-level management ranks and as per the existing policy would have taken quite some time before they could reach the deputy general manager (E-6) level. Though promotions are based on performance beyond the manager (E-4) level, overcrowding between E-4 and E-6 levels generally delays the promotions of aspiring candidates by years. Though the actual number of resignations received is not known, official sources in ONGC admit that the company was now considering introduction of a special career path for "specialists" for easier movement up to the director level. The scheme, however, is yet to be finalised. The key-executives' meeting had also discussed strategies for streamlining the company's HR Policy. On cards is reduction of existing number of management faculties from as high as 108 to 38.
