PSU disinvestment

This refers to the editorial "Unshackling the public sector" (Business Line, July 28), which points out that in spite of the decision to increase financial autonomy of PSUs, many ministers and bureaucrats still behave as if autonomy were a matter of their choice. Autonomy will have no meaning if PSUs are not allowed to take independent decisions like the private sector companies.

Disinvestment of government's excess share of more than 51 per cent in profit making PSUs and restricting them to the public alone could bring in the much needed change. It would also be a great help to the small investor who finds it difficult to make a choice.
