Thiruvananthapuram , Aug. 1

THE State animal husbandry department is launching a Statewide programme to vaccinate all chicken and ducks against specific viral diseases.

Announcing this at a press conference in the city today, Dr K.G. Suma, Additional Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, said chicken would be vaccinated against Ranikhet disease and ducks against duck plague.

The initiative is being implemented with assistance from the Centre, she said. The vaccination campaign, which is the first of its kind in the country, will be carried out over a three-week period.

The department expects the campaign to cover 85 per cent of the 123 lakh chicken and 6 lakh ducks in Kerala. Around 5,000 specially trained volunteers will visit poultry farms to vaccinate the birds, she added. Farmers will have to pay Re 1 for every chicken or duck vaccinated.

The State-level inauguration of the vaccination campaign will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, she said. The Kerala Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowri Amma, is scheduled to inaugurate the campaign, she added.
