Engg goods supply hit by rains in Maharashtra

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Aug. 1

CONTINUOUS rains in Maharashtra and Gujarat have cast a shadow over despatches of light engineering goods from Coimbatore. The squally weather in these States has also caused dislocation in the movement of goods turned out from Coimbatore production bases.

"There is a drop in despatches of engineering items, including the auto-components and castings to companies in Maharashtra by 30 per cent due to the weather-related transportation dislocation," said Mr C.R. Swaminathan, President of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers Association (SIEMA).

The SIEMA chief said that the engineering units here supplying components remained hesitant in sending their dispatches in the light of most auto majors in Maharashtra suspending their production due to water logging in their units there.

Though the textile and garment units here have not so far complained of any dislocation in their dispatches of goods to the western region affected by the rains, there has been slow down in the forwarding of air cargo being routed through Mumbai hub.

The logistic companies using Mumbai hub for transshipment of air cargo dispatched from Coimbatore alone faced a drop of 10 per cent to 15 per cent in the volume of air cargo, which are to be connected to the outbound flights from Mumbai.

This is due to the cancellation of these flights from Mumbai.

"The drop in the export air cargo volume of some 20 per cent seen in the last few days is largely related to the nominated cargo meant to be transshipped by particular airlines from Mumbai," said Mr V.N. Sudhanandan, Deputy Manager (South), Supply Chain and Logistics, Jeena and Company, here. However, bulk of the air cargo routed through the Kochi and Chennai hubs faced no hitches.
